The Problem

A UK based chemical manufacturer required urgent support when a De Dietrich MDL-100 mechanical seal cartridge failed while they attempted to commission a second hand De Dietrich reactor.

Until contacting NASH, they had been unable to find a company that could repair the seal in under 6 weeks.

The Solution

The seal cartridge was sent to NASH for inspection and repair. Key findings included:

  1. Worn outboard seal faces
  2. Undersize outboard stationary face
  3. Significant contamination
  4. Worn and corroded seal sleeve
  5. Badly damaged glassed adaptor plate

The seal was repaired with all new faces, elastomers, sleeve, bearing, lip seals and re-coated adaptor plate. The company was advised to thoroughly clean out the seal support system, refill with clean sealant and bleed off any trapped air before pressurising the system and re-starting the vessel.

The Benefits

The seal cartridge was repaired in 5 days and the reactor was successfully commissioned within the original commissioning time frame, thereby avoiding costly production delays.
