The Problem

A batch chemical company based in the north of England required urgent support when both seals failed on a new SSP lobe pump shortly after commissioning.

The pump was removed and sent to NASH where it was immediately stripped and inspected.

Both the stationary seal rings had been blown out of their housings by product pressure because they were not retained. Furthermore, it quickly became apparent that the rotary units were designed to run internally, not externally as mounted and as required on this type of pump.

The Solution

The rotary units were modified to run as external seals. Retaining plates were manufactured to prevent the stationary seal rings blowing out under pressure. The seals were assembled and fitted to the pump. Both seals underwent a successful hydraulic test to design pressure plus 10%.

The Benefits

By providing specialist support, Nash was able to quickly identify the cause of seal failure, modify the seals and ensure the pump was returned to service 'fit for purpose' in the shortest possible time frame. The user is now enjoying improved pump reliability and a cleaner and safer plant environment.
